The Vape Custodian Programme @ VRC Logistics CIC
Programme Overview
VRC Logistics CIC (Vape Recovery & Compliance) addresses the environmental and safety challenges of vape waste in UK prisons. The Vape Custodian Programme combines safe containment, compliant logistics, and rehabilitative training to turn hazardous waste into purposeful work and positive outcomes.
Programme Structure
• Vape Custodians (people in custody) collect used vapes and clearomizers from wings, yards, and communal areas.
• Items are deposited into tamper‑proof, fire‑resistant bins supplied by VRC and transferred to secure central storage.
• VRC oversees licensed collections, chain‑of‑custody, and delivery to AATF‑certified recyclers.
Training & Accreditation
Delivered with Entrepreneurs Unlocked CIC and Recycle‑IT! CIC. Core modules: safe handling & segregation, environmental awareness, and WEEE compliance. Pathway to recognised qualifications (e.g., CIWM/WAMITAB) to support post‑release employability.
Social Value & Rehabilitation
Structured, purposeful activity builds routine, responsibility, and teamwork. Participants develop job‑ready skills in environmental services and can access employment pathways with VRC Logistics CIC and Recycle‑IT! CIC after release.
Compliance & Innovation
End‑to‑end compliance with WEEE and battery waste requirements: unique bin IDs, auditable movements, evidence notes via AATF partners. FireSafe™ Bin features: double‑walled steel, anti‑fishing chute, tamper‑proof locks. Future: optional IoT fill‑level and temperature monitoring.
Environmental Impact
Prevents lithium batteries entering landfill, reduces vape‑related ignition risks, and improves prison cleanliness. Supports sustainability targets and readiness for forthcoming WEEE reporting expectations across the public sector.
